Science at Stalmine Primary School

 

Children at Stalmine Primary School are encouraged to become critical thinkers from an early age, through a creative curriculum suited to the children’s needs. The excitement, knowledge and skills will provide them with the foundations to support them in a world where science, technology and engineering are at the driving force in many sectors throughout the world.

In Pre-school and Reception, when children begin school, they are provided with endless scientific opportunities, using the outside learning area and Forest School through observing, questioning, problem solving and developing life skills. Each child is encouraged to develop a sense of wonder and will develop deeper thinking and questioning skills to gain a better understanding of the world around them, such as how living things change throughout the seasons.

Once the children have acquired a developing understanding of the world around them, they will be able to carry out simple scientific tests and enquiries. As they move through school this develops further as they learn to carry out fair tests, make predictions, design scientific investigations, measure, record and analyse data and learn how to hypothesise using a wide range of scientific vocabulary.

Stalmine’s Science aims to nurture and encourage children to ask deeper questions and to have the confidence to make mistakes, to learn from them. All children are challenged to meet their full potential, regardless of their circumstances. This in turn will prepare them for life outside of the school environment and enable them to enjoy scientific learning.

Throughout the year, children will participate in a wide range of science based activities.

Outside of Science lessons, we bring Science into school through interesting and relevant activities in British Science Week, Bird Watching Week, International Mud Day (linked to Forest School) and online Sessions with STEM, RAF and Marton Mere nature reserve.

 

Our aim is to create as many scientific opportunities as possible for the children at Stalmine Primary, to provide a rich and creative curriculum.

 

Science Curriculum

Here at Stalmine, Science is taught in mixed aged year groups. To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in Science, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. At the heart of our progressive science curriculum is scientific investigation; wherever possible we intend to deliver lessons where children learn through varied systematic investigations, leading to them being equipped for life to ask and answer scientific questions about the world around them. Lessons are based around age-appropriate knowledge as well as working scientifically skills. Each unit allows pupils to consolidate and retain the science knowledge they have learnt and also reinforce key scientific vocabulary from each Science topic studied. Children will use a range of resources and equipment to develop their knowledge and understanding that is integral to their learning and develop their understanding of working scientifically.  

As children progress through their journey at Stalmine, they build on their skills in working scientifically, as well as on their scientific knowledge, as they develop greater independence in planning and carrying out fair and comparative tests to answer a range of scientific questions. By the end of their Stalmine journey, children will be provided with the foundations for understanding the world; the scientific knowledge and skills needed to be successful scientists; and meet the requirements of the national curriculum.
